Team history
Ferenc Puskás, Sándor Kocsis and Nándor Hidegkuti were central to the side that beat England 6–3 at Wembley in 1953, before losing the 1954 World Cup final to West Germany.
Hungary also reached the 1938 World Cup final and finished third at EURO 1964. After a long absence from major finals, they returned at EURO 2016 and won their group before a round-of-16 defeat. Further EURO appearances in 2020 and 2024 marked a modern revival, separate from the extraordinary achievements of the Golden Team.
