Team history
Iceland reached the EURO 2016 quarter-finals on their first appearance at a major men's tournament. The 2–1 round-of-16 win against England became the defining result, with Ragnar Sigurðsson and Kolbeinn Sigþórsson scoring after an early penalty put Iceland behind.
Two years later the team made their World Cup debut and drew with Argentina in their opening match. They did not progress from the group, but the consecutive finals appearances changed the scale of Iceland's international ambitions. Eiður Guðjohnsen's earlier career and Aron Gunnarsson's leadership provide different reference points in that development.
