Team history
Their men's national team have not yet reached a EURO or World Cup finals, so important wins carry particular weight in the country's football history.
The 2–0 victory over Greece in February 1975 was Malta's first European qualifying win. Carmel Busuttil, Michael Mifsud and Gilbert Agius represent different generations of a national team regularly facing opponents from much larger football systems. Their international careers are important reference points even without a major finals appearance.
