Team history
Montenegro began their separate senior international history with a 2–1 win against Hungary in 2007, with goals from Mirko Vučinić and Igor Burzanović, after the state union with Serbia ended.
Their strongest early European campaign came in qualifying for EURO 2012. Montenegro finished second in a group containing England and reached the play-offs, where Czechia won over two legs. Stevan Jovetić and Stefan Savić joined Vučinić among the team's prominent international names. A first senior EURO or World Cup finals appearance remains unachieved.
