Team history
The Netherlands won EURO 1988 with a 2–0 final victory against the Soviet Union, including Marco van Basten’s famous volley. It was their first major title after the World Cup final defeats of 1974 and 1978.
The Dutch returned to the World Cup final in 2010 and took third place in 2014. Their history also includes the EURO 2024 semi-finals. Johan Cruyff's era established an enduring reputation for positional play and collective movement, but later generations have used different systems.
The 1988 European champions lost their opening group match to the Soviet Union, then beat the same opponents 2–0 in the final. That reversal is a useful reminder that an opening result does not define an entire tournament. Later Dutch World Cup runs reached the final without delivering the title won by the 1988 side in Europe.
