Team history
Poland finished third at the World Cups of 1974 and 1982. Grzegorz Lato was the leading scorer in 1974, while Kazimierz Deyna and Zbigniew Boniek belong to the generations that established the team's strongest global results.
Their best European Championship run came much later, at EURO 2016. Poland reached the quarter-finals and lost to eventual champions Portugal on penalties without losing a match in normal or extra time. Robert Lewandowski became the central attacking figure of the modern era, but the national team's tournament record extends well beyond the career of one forward.
