Team history

Jack Charlton's team had already appeared at EURO 1988, where a 1–0 win against England became one of the national side's most celebrated results.

Later generations reached the World Cup round of 16 in 1994 and 2002, and the EURO 2016 round of 16 after beating Italy in the group stage. Paul McGrath, Roy Keane, Robbie Keane and Damien Duff represent different parts of that history. The Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland have separate teams and records.

Ireland reached the 1990 quarter-finals without winning a match in normal or extra time. Three group draws were followed by a penalty shoot-out victory against Romania, then a 1–0 defeat by Italy.
