Team history
Wales reached the EURO 2016 semi-finals with Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey, winning their group and eliminating Northern Ireland and Belgium before losing to Portugal. The 3–1 quarter-final win against Belgium remains a defining result.
The earlier major finals appearance was the 1958 World Cup, where Wales reached the quarter-finals. They returned to that competition in 2022 after a 64-year absence. John Charles, Ian Rush, Mark Hughes and Ryan Giggs represent different eras leading up to the generation that restored regular tournament qualification.
The 1958 quarter-final against Brazil was decided by Pelé's first World Cup goal. Wales did not return to a major finals until EURO 2016, making that later semi-final run particularly significant. The two campaigns are separated by different tournament formats as well as by generations of players.
