Team history

Their world titles came in 1934, 1938, 1982 and 2006; their European crowns followed in 1968 and at EURO 2020, played in 2021. The latter final was decided on penalties against England at Wembley.

The Azzurri's history includes contrasting kinds of success: Paolo Rossi's goals in 1982, the defensive foundations of the 2006 champions and the collective attacking play of the EURO 2020 side. Giuseppe Meazza, Paolo Maldini, Roberto Baggio and Gianluigi Buffon belong to different chapters of that story.

Italy's first European title required a replay. The 1968 final against Yugoslavia ended 1–1, and Italy won the second match 2–0. In 2006 and 2021, by contrast, their World Cup and EURO final victories were settled by penalty shoot-outs. The way a final was decided is part of the history, not a reason to alter its official result.
