Team history
Slovenia’s first major finals, EURO 2000 and the 2002 World Cup, were closely associated with Zlatko Zahovič and the successful qualifying runs of a young independent national team.
At EURO 2024, Slovenia reached the knockout phase of a major tournament for the first time. They drew all three group matches and then held Portugal for 120 minutes before losing on penalties in the round of 16. The result added a new team milestone to a history that also features goalkeeper Samir Handanović and forward Josip Iličić.
