Team history

Switzerland reached the EURO 2020 quarter-finals by beating France on penalties after a 3–3 draw. At EURO 2024, a 2–0 round-of-16 win against defending champions Italy took them to another quarter-final.

At the 2026 World Cup Switzerland returned to the last eight for the first time since 1954, before losing to Argentina after extra time. Their earlier World Cup quarter-finals came in 1934, 1938 and 1954. Josef Hügi, Stéphane Chapuisat, Alexander Frei and Xherdan Shaqiri connect different generations of a side whose tournament consistency has grown beyond occasional qualification.
