Team history

Scotland played England in the first official international in Glasgow in 1872, a 0–0 draw that gives their history a founding role beyond appearances at major finals.

The Scots have played at both World Cups and European Championships but have not yet progressed beyond the group stage. Their 2026 World Cup return ended that way too. Kenny Dalglish, Denis Law, Graeme Souness and Gordon Strachan belong to generations that made Scotland internationally recognisable, while more recent EURO appearances in 2020 and 2024 restored regular finals involvement.

Scotland left the 1974 World Cup unbeaten, yet still did not advance from their group. A win against Zaire and draws with Brazil and Yugoslavia were not enough on goal difference. That campaign shows why a team's final position needs the group context, not just a list of wins, draws and defeats.
