Team history
Portugal won the EURO 2016 final against France through Éder’s extra-time goal after Cristiano Ronaldo had gone off injured. The title came twelve years after defeat by Greece in their home EURO 2004 final.
The team later won the Nations League in 2019 and again in 2025. At World Cups, third place in 1966, inspired by Eusébio, remains their best finish; the 2006 side reached the semi-finals. Luís Figo and Rui Costa connect those generations with the later Ronaldo era. Portugal's international record is therefore broader than one player's extraordinary individual achievements.
Portugal's first World Cup appearance in 1966 ended with nine goals for Eusébio and third place for the team. The EURO 2016 final was decided by a substitute's goal, while both Nations League titles were won against different opponents: the Netherlands in 2019 and Spain in 2025. The decisive moments have involved much more than the best-known starter.
